Local Spotlight: Volunteer State Community College

Colleges and universities both further students’ education and bring the community together. For over four decades Volunteer State Community College has done exactly that for students and adults in Nashville, Gallatin, and Madison. Since 1971, this beloved institution has been offering higher learning to the Music City and surrounding suburbs.

Vol State

college Volunteer State Community College, or Vol State as it’s commonly referred to, is a public community college that’s located in Gallatin, TN. It’s only about a half hour from downtown Nashville and offers 2-year associates degrees, certifications, and continuing education to students of all ages.

Academic Programs

Vol State offers over 100 programs for students and working adults looking to further their education. The curriculums are grouped into five major divisions:

  • Business and Technology
  • Humanities
  • Math and Science
  • Social Science and Education
  • Health Sciences

In those fields, students can obtain a technical certificate or an Associate of Applied Science degree to jump right into the work force after graduation. If you’re interested in transferring to a 4-year college or university, they offer Associate of Arts, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Science in Teaching degrees.

They’re also proud to offer education and guidance to veterans. To say thank you to the men and women who’ve served our country, they established the Office of Adult Learners and Veterans Affairs to help vets with setting and achieving career goals.

Campus Life

camps lifeThe campus of Vol State is a lively spot with the opportunity to enjoy lots of recreational group activities. There are over a dozen clubs and organizations you can join, including student government and a campus newspaper.

For some fun and fitness, you can visit the fitness center and workout at your own pace or sign up for a class. There are also four athletic teams for students looking to play some competitive sports. These include baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s basketball.

There’s a lot of arts and culture to enjoy too. Throughout the year, you can also enjoy recitals, concerts, and browse through art exhibits.
